Campus Involvement Campus Involvement Once again, as the fall semester rolled around this school year, I was busier than the previous year. I have always been involved in student life, and each semester since I have attended Lee, my involvement seems to grow, as do I. My first semester, I was a senate member in the Student Leadership Council (SLC), and I played intramurals. The next year, I was a cabinet member of the SLC. I was stretched beyond belief compared to my previous leadership experiences, but I was very happy. This year, once again I am involved more than ever and being stretched more than ever as I am the Residence Director (RD) at Tharp Hall as well as a senate member on the SLC. My job is more than a student job. The job is a staff job with staff benefits. Being a RD is hard to define because the job is always changing, as am I. Being a RD includes everything from reporting maintenance requests, enforcing school rules, promoting spiritually enriching activities, to providing social activities, creating an a cademic but yet fun living environment, working through conflicts, coping with emergencies, doing reports for Marchese, Tilley, McClung, and others, doing my ?special duty, etc. The list grows every day. I got involved in Residential Life for several reasons. The first is that someone asked me to apply. The benefits were good so I tried it. The second reason is that I knew I wanted to be involved, but I did not know in what at the end of last year. I did not want to continue my position as Secretary for Community Service, but I did want to continue to be involved and challenged somehow. The third reason is because I was hired to encourage community service in the dorms. I really enjoy working with groups of girls, but until now I have never had the opportunity to do so formally. I feel the Lord has definitely placed me here for a reason. Since I have been a part of Residential Life as well as other leadership positions, I have learned many important leadership lessons. Before I came to Lee, I had not thought much about my leadership style, my philosophy, or anything of the sort. This year, I have thought more about it than ever. Before I even started this position, I wrote out my leadership philosophy the best I could. My leadership philosophy majors on issues like integrity, trust, and honesty. I believe in being a servant first. People must serve those so called ?below? them. I believe in having a clear sense of vision and a mission. Without a vision, where would a leader be leading his/her followers to? I believe a leader must know where they are going. Since I actually started the job my leadership style and philosophy has been tweaked continually. I am always trying to be constantly aware of leadership lessons. I now try to major on things like celebrating victories and making people feel appreciated, setting cl ear expectations for both my RA's and my residents, modeling the way, building relationships, etc. For instance, to set clear expectations for my RA's, I developed a RA handbook personalized to Tharp Hall and my leadership style to let them know how exactly I lead and precisely what is expected of them. I have learned many great leadership lessons this year. Depending on whether great means the hardest or if great means the most important, one of the greatest leadership lessons I have learned is the value of building relationships. I started the semester off with a RA retreat with just the staff from Tharp Hall. We did not talk about any dorm stuff. Instead, we just bonded. As the weeks go by, each week or every two weeks I try to maintain that relationship with my RA's by having an outing with just the four of us unrelated to dorm life. The basic rights that we take for granted today, like for example freedom of speech and the right to bare arms, were merely dreams to the freed slaves of 1865. Although they were considered free by the national government, ex-slaves were not free, they were constantly terrorized by whites. The North had won freedom for slaves; however it was the South that would place the limitations on them. State governments set up what were known as Black Codes, laws that defined freedom for African Americans in ways that were similar to slavery, to regulate and control the former slaves. Whites in the South formed racist groups to terrorize African Americans and whites that were against slavery, the most notorious being the Ku Klux Klan. These groups and even non-members would hold public hangings, or lynching, of former slaves and other blacks. Freedmen, free negroes and mulattoes were constantly haunted by the enforcement of Black Codes and fearful of public lynching and the Ku Klux Klan, after being released from slavery. The Mississippi Black Codes of November 1865 was considered an act to confer Civil Rights on Freedmen, similar to the Bill of Rights. Included were laws like, it shall be unlawful for any freedman, free negro, or mulatto to inter-marry with any white person, if this were to happen they would be sent to the State penitentiary for life. These are visual, which include those who learn by watching and seeing; auditory and interpersonal, including those who learn by listening and discussing; and kinaesthetic or tactile, which comprises of those who learn through activity. Examples of this in the story are the â€Å"hints of death† that come out towards the reader such as when the Scarlet Ibis died, Aunt Nicey said that red birds were dangerous and unlucky, and Doodle ended up dying bright red. Another example of how foreshadowing develops the mood is that when Doodle was little, his family named him William Armstrong. The narrator then said â€Å"such a name sounds good only on a tombstone. † These examples of foreshadowing create a somber and solemn mood in the story because it is thought that even though actual death may not have yet happened in the story, the reader will still know that either death or something tragic likely will occur later in the story based on the wording the author chooses. Authors use symbols to add deeper meaning to certain people or objects in a story. Symbols affect the mood because the mood depends on the symbols the writer uses to define the it without having to directly state the mood or theme intended in the story. An example of symbolism in the story is the narrator’s pride. In â€Å"The Scarlet Ibis,† the narrator’s pride gets the best of him, therefore his pride equals danger. When trying to teach Doodle how to do the basic abilities of a child his age, the narrator went way too far and overworked Doodle because he didn’t want to be made fun of because of his â€Å"special† brother that couldn’t do anything. In the end, the narrator ended up straining and exhausting Doodle to where Doodle’s body and weak heart could take no more and he passed away. In this short story, the Scarlet Ibis symbolized Doodle in numerous ways. Both Doodle and the Scarlet Ibis were called â€Å"special† and â€Å"unlucky† when they were born. They were also both found dead on the ground the color bright red which is a symbol of blood. Finally, both Doodle and the Scarlet Ibis had come a surprisingly long way from where they started. At the first of the story, Doodle was believed not to even live a couple of days, but he pulled through and worked hard in learning how to walk, row, and do other basic activities. As he kept trying to do more and more work each day, it put more and more stress and pain on his body and his weak heart, he overworked himself, and therefore, his body gave up under all the pressure. When the narrator’s family found the Scarlet Ibis dead, it was noticeable that it had flown from somewhere extensively far away. The Scarlet Ibis and Doodle did the exact same thing – they tried to work themselves more to hopefully accomplish more in the long run, but ultimately ended up killing themselves because their bodies weren’t made strong and proficient, they were made fragile and delicate. In â€Å"The Scarlet Ibis,† the author, James Hurst, clearly defines the valuable message of not letting pride get the best of one. This use of life lessons and other literary elements helped to exemplify the themes demonstrated in the story – setting, foreshadowing, and symbolism. Hurst’s style of descriptive and creative writing genuinely told the reader the importance of a supportive family and community in this Southern short story.

X and Y Theory Various sources of motivation are accountable for energizing individual behaviour. McGregor?s X and Y theory is primarily a negative and positive view of employees respectively. Theory X assumes employees to be lazy and must be coerced to perform, and that lower order needs dominate individuals. In contrast, theory Y assumes that employees are responsible can exercise self-direction and that higher level needs predominate.
